Starbirth regions. Hubble space telescope (HST) optical image of starbirth regions in the galaxy NGC 4214. The glowing gas clouds (emission nebulae) contain clusters of huge hot young stars (lower centre to lower right). The gas clouds glow as the hydrogen gas they contain is ionised by ultraviolet radiation from the new stars. The stars formed due to gravitational collapse of parts of the gas clouds. The powerful stellar winds of the stars blows holes in their envelopes of gas, as seen around the large clusters at lower centre. NGC 4214 lies 13 million light years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici.
