The entrance gate to the underground complex at Manod slate mine where the National Gallery's painting were hidden during World War II.
The site of Manod was chosen as the National Gallery's hiding place for several reasons: the site was remote, the caverns provided a stable environment for the paintings and the thick layer of granite above the slate made the caverns practically bomb-proof.
