It arrives al)out the <dose of the tliird week Descriptive List 305 in April, and lias been noted as late as September 13 at Raleigh, and October 1 atAsheville. It appears to be absent from the eastern border of the State. The Chat is a noisy, though shy bird, and is also one of the few species that singat night as well as in the daytime. When singing, it frequently flies upward withflapping wings and jerking tail, finally finishing its performance by a quick diveinto a neighboring Fig. 249, Yellow-bbeastkd Chat. The eggs are three or four in number, laid in ^Nlay and June. These are purewhite with a glossy surface, marked with specks and spots of some shade of .92 X .71. The nest is placed among briars or in a small bush at a height ofone to five feet from the ground, and is constructed of grass or of weed stems, linedwith fine grass or roots. Genus Wilsonia (Bonap.)
