Heis suffering from a severe attack of bronchitisand pneumonia, and at one time was so lowthat his recovery seemed extremely Crosby, who is both an eloquent preacherand a brilliant scholar, was born in New YorkCity, on February 27th, 1826. He graduatedfrom the New York University in 1844, and forseveral years was Professor of Greek in thatUniversity and subsequently at Rutgers College,New Brunswick. In 1863 he succeeded the Parker as pastor of the Fourth AvenuePresbyterian Church. He has travelled exten-sively in Bible lands and has written severaladmirable volumes on the subject, besidesbooks on other topics. His best known work. is his Commentary of the New Testament. Inaddition to his pulpit duties, he has taken avery active interest in public affairs, being al-ways found working on the side of moralityand good government. His elder son, ErnestH. Crosby, is American Consul at Alexandria,Egypt, while the younger son, Nicholas, is profes-sor of Greek in a private college in this country. The Effort to Find a Basis for Union Amongthe Churches has met with an unexpectedcheck in New York. As announced in thesecolumns a few weeks ago, Dr. W. S. Rainsford,Rector of St. Georges Protestant EpiscopalChurch, whose portrait is given below, in-vited Dr. Lyman Abbott, the Pastor of PlymouthCongregational Church, Brooklyn, to preacha sermon at one of the services which holds on Friday evenings duringLent.
