A photographer captures the pristine starry sky in the Atacama Desert, Chile. In the sky the Carina Nebula can be seen (near centre). The Cerro Paranal Observatory, home to the Very Large Telescope (VLT), is in the background. The VLT, one of the most powerful telescopes in the world, is operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
