While it is claimed that the large mailorder houses are a serious obstacle inthe natural growth and development ofthe country, it is true that they arewaking up the ordinary retailers tostudy proper and fair relations betweenthemselves and their customers. As long as the farmers and the work-ing people do not take more interest intheir immediate surroundings than theydo in the far off centres, they will nat-urally give no preference to their owntowns. Here is where the duty of thetown merchant comes in, and if themerchants will work to meet this higherplane of business relationship they willfind that the people will support theirown towns to a large extent.
