Workers laying an oil pipeline. Group of men laying an oil pipeline for the Tide Water Oil Company. In 1859, oil was found in the hills of Pennsylvania, USA. By the 1870s, so much oil was being produced that a pipeline was built to transport the oil. The 6-inch pipe (around 15 centimetres across) extended 725 kilometres to Bayonne, New Jersey. The pipeline was completed in 1880 and at this point the Tide Water Pipe Company was renamed the Tide Water Oil Company. This photograph is from a collection of unpublished images, dating from the 1860s to the 1920s, taken for 'The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States' (1925-1929).
