Built between 1879 and 1912 the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval was the brain child of the local postman of the village Hauterives The complex is an extraordinary blend of styles combining Indian and Egyptian motifs with primitive figures stairways walkways symbols and a profusion of enigmatic inscriptions In 1969 the then arts minister André Malraux listed the building Monument Historique citing it as the only example in architecture of naive art
