Mantid and opossum. 18th-century artwork showing the life cycle of the mantid Stagmatoptera precaria (across top). At bottom is a species of South American opossum, with its young on its back using their prehensile tails to hold on to their mother's tail. This artwork is based on Plate 66 from 'Metamorphosibus Insectorum Surinamensium' (1705) by German nature illustrator Maria Sybilla Merian (1647-1717). Surinam (now called Suriname) is in northern South America.
