The Santa Fe line it will be observed wasthen nearing Albuquerque; while the St. Louis & San Fran-cisco which as yet only reached Vinita, Indian Territory, hadpassed under the control of a group of financiers whoplanned to build their road first to Wichita, Kansas. Bothcompanies were bent upon constructing or getting controlof a line to the Pacific Coast. The Santa Fe had its road. An Outlet to the Pacific 217 practically completed from Wichita to Albuquerque. TheSt. Louis & San Francisco would soon extend its line to Wich-ita, and it contemplated building from Pacific City intoSt. Louis at an early date. The latter company had suc-ceeded to the Atlantic & Pacific land grant and franchisesconferred by the Federal charter of 1866. Thus the twocompanies decided to combine their resources and cooperatein building a main line from Albuequerque to new road which would be known as the Western Divisionof the Atlantic & Pacific was to be constructed under theoriginal Atlantic & Pacific charter. The project when re-alized would give a new and continuous railroad route fromthe Mississippi river to the Pacific Coast. January 31st, 1880, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Feand the St. Louis & San Francisco Companies entered intotwo agreements for the prosecution of this enterprise.
