A hunter's wanderings in Africa, being a narrative of nine years spent amongst the game of the far interior of South Africa, containing accounts of explorations beyond the Zambesi, on the river Chobe, and in the Matabele and Mashuna countries, with full notes upon the natural history and present distribution of all the large M__a_m_m_a_i_a . hem when wounded into verythick bush, I think I have had sufficient experienceto express an opinion on the subject. , I know ofseveral instances where buffaloes have chargedsuddenly, and apparently in unprovoked ferocity,upon people who never even saw them until theywere dashed, in many cases mortally wounded, to theground; but I believe that, in at any rate themajority of cases, if the whole truth could be madeknown, these buffaloes would be found to have beenpreviously wounded by some other hunter, andfinding themselves suddenly confronted by anothersportsman in the thicket or patch of long grass towhich they had retired to brood over their injuries,at once rushed upon the intruder, perhaps more fromthe instinct of self-defence than anything else.
