Chapelle de la Vierge, St Sulpice

The view taken in 1828, shows the Chapel of the Virgin of the Church of St Sulpice, commenced in 1646 by Louis Levau. The dome of the chapel is painted in fresco by Lemoine representing the Assumption of the Virgin. Levau’s designs were elaborated by Oppenord, Servandoni (portico), Maclaurin and Chalgrin (the towers of unequal height). The interior is very beautiful with a pulpit designed by Wailly with magnificent decorations. There are fine paintings in the church by Carlo Vanloo. The image shows the West Front together with groups of people in the courtyard outside. The image was drawn by T T Barry under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by J Hershall
