The Church Army was an organisation of lay evangelists within the Church of England, founded on the model of the Salvation Army in the slums of London in 1882 by Wilson Carlile. Later it became primarily concerned with social work and rehabilitation. In 1892 the first Church Army mission horse-drawn van left central London to go to the countryside south of London. The use of vans and caravans had come about when it became clear that Church Army missions were rarely touching people living in the countryside, so they started using these vehicles to take evangelists from one village to another. The evangelists on these vans would take services in schools and open-air meetings. Initially these vans were pulled by horses but later became motorised. Today army officers either serve parish churches in England as specialists in evangelism or serve in specialised ministries various parts of society. They also serve as missionaries in other countries. Autonomous societies exist in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, the Caribbean, and East Africa. The Church Army has over 300 commissioned evangelists who have been commissioned as Church Army Evangelists. Church Army's funded work focuses on centres of mission and key projects and tend to operate in areas of deprivation.
