. Social England; a record of the progress of the people in religion, laws, learning, arts, industry, commerce, science, literature and manners, from the earliest times to the present day . ; over the coat of mail a breast-plate of platearmour, forming a second protection for the body, was super-imposed. Aillettes, or roundels, shielded the .shoulders fromdownward cuts; arm-pieces and leg-pieces of plate protectedthe limbs. Such ot the old chain-armour as was retainedwas hardly visible, being entirely covered by the extra casingof plate. The helmet once more became peaked, and wasknown as a bassinet, the neck was protected by a lightfalling piece of chain-mail, fastened to the bassinet at thetop and to the shoulders at the bottom, and called thecannnail. The superior protection secured by the new armourwas won at the cost of mobility. The knight of 1860 wasfar more overweighted and less able to move with rapiditythan th(! knight of 1200. His forces failed sooner ; hisbalance both on horse and nn foot was less easy to keep. Ageneration later, when men still persisted in overloadingthemselves with more armour, they became more helpless. Early Plate Arinour (MS. Boy. 20 D. i.). n r. v^,
