BALLOCHMYLE Hospital has been commemorated with a cairn and plaque for the role it played in treating soldiers injured during the second world war. The residents of Ballochmyle Estate and the Mauchline Burns Club combined to commemorate the work of the hospital and Burns’ bonnie lass. The cairn and plaque were unveiled on Wednesday October 19. Sir Kenneth Calman unveiled the commemorative a cairn and plaque to mark the work of the hospital in both war and peace time. As a wartime centre it treated service personnel from various theatres of war including the D Day landings. It was internationally acclaimed for the plastic surgery unit dealing with both Scottish and London blitz victims. The plaque in memory of Wilhelmina Alexander, the bonnie lass of Ballochmyle, was appropriately unveiled by Lady Hagart-Alexander, wife of the late Sir Claud Alexander, a direct descendant of Wilhelmina’s brother.
