He received his education inthe excellent schools of the Father-land, completing his studies with acollege course, and graditating in1887. Coming to California, he en-gaged in the wholesale wine andli(|i:or business, meeting with mark-ed success, and despite the heavylosses caused by the great lire of1906. re-established himself at politics in 1903, he waselected to the Board of Supervisors,of which body he has been a mem-ber ever since except during 1906and 1907. In the fall of the latter}ear he received the highest votecast for any single nominee. In 1909 he was again successful, also in1911. on the latter occasion being one of the nine leaders of the suc-cessful list who secured terms of four years each instead of two.
