Virgin and Child. Pyrenees, c 1225. walnut with traces of polythromy. The Virgin is seated with the Christ Child on her lap. Here she is more than merely the mother of Jesus, she is the symbolic throne on which the child sits, the incarnation of divine wisdom; the sedes saplentlae. Together with carved Crucifixes, this is one of the earliest subjects of free-standing sculpture during the Middle Ages.
