George, eldest child of Hiram andElizabeth (McClelland) Norcross, wasborn April 8, 1838, near Erie, Pennsyl-vania, and was six years old when hisparents removed to Monmouth, Illinois,where he received his early educationin the public schools and at the selectschool presided over by Mr. W. B. then entered McDonough College, atMcComb, Illinois, passing thence toMonmouth College, where he graduatedin the class of 1861.
