The George Mason Memorial, located in East Potomac Park near the Tidal Basin in Washington DC, honors George Mason, one of America's founding fathers and the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. Dedicated in 2002, the memorial was designed by landscape architect Fern Villasenor and features a 72-foot-long stone wall with a bronze statue of Mason sculpted by Wendy M. Ross. The garden setting includes a circular pool, benches, and various flowering trees and shrubs, including saucer magnolias (Magnolia x soulangeana). These deciduous trees, known for their large, showy flowers that bloom in early spring, typically precede the famous cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin. The saucer magnolia, a hybrid between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliiflora, produces goblet-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink, and purple. The memorial's location within the National Mall and Memorial Parks system makes it a popular spot for visitors during the spring blooming season, offering a quieter alternative to the more crowded cherry blossom areas.
