When greenhouses are emptied of the plants which they are destined to contain, and protect during winter, the Ges- neriaceous Plants are ready to take their places, and by their varied and i admirable colors amply repay for their cultivation. We have for years possessed large collections of Gloxinias, Achimenes, Eucadonias, etc., which I have attracted much attention when in bloom. Among our annual importa- tions we expect a large invoice of tubers of the most desirable novelties, which will be ready for shipment in March. After the 1st of April we can only supply the plants in vegetation, and as they must then be shipped in pots, the prices will be from 50 to 100 per cent advance upon j those of the dry tubers. These plants vegetate during the summer only. ; The tubers must be kept in dry sand during winter, and potted offin March. j Plunge the pots in a hot bed, where they will soon commence to grow. As they increase -in size, give larger pots and water regularly during their period of vegetation. When better known we are satisfied that they will become universal favorites. The fact that the tubers are imported direct from our European correspondents, the world-renowned Horticultural estab- lishment of Louis Van Houtte, Ghent, Belgium, is of itself a guarantee of J their merits.
