The Norman tower of the Cotswold Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist at Burford, in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, England, is strengthened by steel bands and ties, some cut and chased into ancient stonework below dogtooth-moulded Romanesque windows. St John’s, founded in 1125, was one of many large ‘wool’ churches that reflected the wealth and status of communities in Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire brought by sheep farming and the medieval wool trade.
Burford, Oxfordshire, England, UK: the Norman tower of the Cotswolds Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist is strengthened by steel bands and ties, some cut and chased into ancient stonework below dogtooth-moulded Romanesque windows. St. John’s, founded in 1125, was one of many large ‘wool’ churches that emphasised the wealth and status of communities in Gloucestershire and West Oxfordshire brought by sheep farming and the medieval wool trade. At Burford, the original church was enlarged several times and the tower was heightened, with a graceful spire added in the late-15th century.
