A blue sky, white clouds sunny day high tide view of a black tree trunk surrounded by sea water, a short way out from the western end of the Outer Promenade around Fairhaven Lake, Lytham St Annes. The view looks south across the estuary of the River Ribble towards Southport. The tidal range varies. A 7 metre high tide covers only a small section of beach, allowing large areas to dry out and blow in the wind. A 10 metre high tide (seen here), in contrast, will flood the beach and reach the coastline, leaving the beach wet at low tide. Tree remains, derived from bank erosion in the upper reaches of the Ribble, are occasionally washed onto the beach by the high tide. The log here is lying on a flooded area of saltmarsh grass. A high tide, a few hours later, turned the log 90 degrees. A high tide a few weeks later washed the log onto walkway sand (below the camera). It was cut up and removed.
