the Bhiwandi water pipeline Mumbai, one of the major supply pipes for the city has burst

Maintaining a steady supply of fresh water to much of the Indian city of Mumbai's million inhabitants is a constant challenge and the huge pipes that run overland from dams and tanks on the city limits frequently suffer leaks or even on occasion burst this can be down to structural failures or sabotage as impoverished locals tap into the pipes to obtain free supplies Earlier this week the Bhiwandi water pipeline, one of the major supply pipes for the city burst . Although engineers from the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Water department were quick on the scene they announced that it would necessary to impose a 35% cut in water supply for the 24-36 hrs or so it would take to repair the pipeline. As a separate but related development, the MMCW a private company has begun to step up the pressure on those that have defaulted on their payments . This has resulted in many high profile defaulters, including the police commissioner's office, the governors residence [ ie mayors] and some of south mumbai's poshest residences having their taps run dry until the evening time. The MMCW said that they were forced into taking such drastic action after the failure of repeated more soft handed attempts at recovery of their dues. The situation is set to worsen in the summer months if like last year the city has a late monsoon.
