In this photograph, taken in 1966 during the Vietnam War, a Navy hospital Corpsman and a young Marine from the 9th Marines are seen examining a captured 122mm howitzer. This was the largest enemy gun captured in South Vietnam, with the North Vietnamese soldiers attempting to reposition it to face down the Ashau Valley. However, US Marines intervened during Operation Dewey Canyon, preventing the completion of the repositioning and forcing the enemy to spike the gun before retreating. This image is from the Defense Department (Marine Corps).
