Fibrous dysplasia. Coloured X-ray of the femur (thigh bone) of a patient with fibrous dysplasia. This is a developmental abnormality that results in solid bone being replaced with weaker fibrous material (darker areas within the bone). Symptoms include aching and tender bones, and a tendency to fracture easily. The cause is unknown.
