Lisbon, Portugal The Discovery Monument, Monument to the discoveries, Situated on the Targus riverbank, where the river goes on to join the Atlantic Ocean. This monument celebrates the navigation from Portugal and the discovery of the New world. Henry the Navigator takes pride of place at the front of the monument. The Portuguese name for the monument is the Padroa dos Descobrimentos. Built in 1960 to commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the death of prince Henry the navigator Vasco da Gama and other members of the marine and aristocratic world. The age of discovery spanned the 15th and 16th Centuries.
