The American Petroleum Institute has taken charge offirst-aid training in at least part of the petroleum preparing to take over the training and preparatory toissuing its own first-aid certificates for instructors, the Amer- 59 ican Petroleum Institute asks applicants for certificates: (1)the amount of first-aid training received from the Bureau ofMines and when this instruction was received; (2) the num-ber of first-aid classes conducted by the applicant and thenumber of men trained by the Bureau of Mines method orany other method; and (3) the period of time over which theapplicants activity as a first-aid instructor extended. The action taken by the American Petroleum Instituteis probably what the Bureau of Mines would like to havedone in all branches of the mining and allied industries. To. Undercu+Hng the coal preparatory to blasting. that end, the Bureau has developed the cooperative methodof giving this training so that the greater proportion of in these industries may be trained with a min-imum of assistance from the Bureau, which will permit thepersonnel to conduct other safety maintenance work. Mine rescue-training is necessarily restricted to a muchsmaller number of persons, but the work is of even greaterimportance to the individual that first aid because a manwho attempts to assist in mine rescue endangers his ownlife. Only well-trained men should undertake this type ofwork. The training is strenuous, and every person tak- 60 ing the instruction must pass a prescribed physical examina-tion. The training requires 20 hours, of which time 10 hoursare consumed in doing work while wearing oxygen breathingapparatus. Many private companies own oxygen breathing-apparatusto be used in emergencies. A valuable service of the SafetyDiv
