About10 per cent of the amount of steam re-quired by each engine is condensed inreheater coils and returned to the feed-water practically at a temperature of the water in the boilers, thus adding to the economy of the plant. The speed of each engine is controlled by means of a power-ful shaft governor, situated in the fly-wheel. The governoroperates a shifting eccentric to which are connected the auxil-iary steam valves on both high-pressure and low-pressurecylinders. The main distribution valves on both cylinders areconnected to a fixed eccentric, as are also the main exhaustvalves. As the load changes the cut-off is varied alike onboth cylinders, maintaining at all times an equal division of the To ^l. ntinal# -Batterv Terminal KEY RqunUzer Leails Positive Leads Negative Leads Discharge Resisiaiict Leads -+- Field k Wattmeter Leads —Field Leads Alternating Current Leads ENGINES AND GENERATORSThe direct-connected railway unit consists of an 18-in. Each engine isfitted with an automatic lubricating system, delivering a supplyof oil to all wearing parts under pressure. A feature of special interest is the use of Mcintosh & Sey-mour compound-delaying dashpots on the larger engine that January 9, 1904.] STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 61
