Hitchhiking Hooks on Rough Cocklebur, Xanthium strumarium


This bur is being buoyant and easily disperses in the water for plants growing along waterways. However, the bur, with its hooked projections, is obviously adapted to dispersal via mammals by becoming entangled in their hair.
