The south steeple at Old St. Patrick's Church just west of Chicago's Loop is the oldest church in the city. It is one of very few structures that predated the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, being built in 1854. It has been referenced as a cornerstone of Irish culture in the city. The towers represent the eastern and wester churches. Some of the interior is modeled after illustrations in the Irish treasure, The Book of Kells, which is housed at Trinity College in Dublin. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. It is also a historic Chicago landmark.
