EL TORCAL SEEN FROM VILLANUEVA El Torcal is a limestone tableland plateau or mesa next to Villanueva de le Concepcion part of the Torcal de Antequera in the Sierra de Chiminea Andalucia southern Spain The rocks of this nature reserve are eroded into deep gullies and pillars as well as beds of clint and gryke pattern similar to the Burren in Ireland or Malham and Goredale in Yorkshire UK Signposted or guided walks lead through the maze of deeper features but a good road and cafe visitor centre allow short visits with excellent scenic views and experience of the weathered rock with its wild thyme and marjoram underfoot It can be extremely cold in winter even on a bright November day like this when people are swimming in the sea half an hour away as El Torcal is about 1300 metres above sea level The gate to the reserve is closed at night You may also meet hunters with dogs as la caza the chase is a popular and functional sport in Andalucia with the game eaten as part of a normal diet
