Henri Bergson (1859-1941), French philosopher. Bergson studied at the University of Paris (the Sorbonne), graduating in 1881 and obtaining his doctorate in 1889. He taught at various schools and colleges, and authored 'Time and Free Will' (1889). This was followed by 'Matter and Memory' (1896). He became Professor of Greek and Roman Philosophy at the College de France in 1900, followed by the Chair of Modern Philosophy in 1904. His other major works were 'Creative Evolution' (1907) and 'The Two Sources of Morality and Religion' (1932). His key philosophical theory (named 'Duration') involved applying a form of intuition to understand the concepts of time and consciousness. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1927.
