The Jesuit order, or Society of Jesus, was founded by aSpaniard, Ignatius Loyola. He had been a soldier in his youngerdays, and while bravely fighting for his king, Charles V, hadbeen wounded by a cannon ball (1521). Obliged to lie inactivefor weeks, he occupied his time in reading the lives of the saintsand became filled with a burning ambition to emulate theirdeeds.
