Torn cruciate ligament. Artwork of an arthroscope (joint endoscope) being used to diagnose a torn (red) anterior cruciate ligament (white). Ligaments are bands of inelastic fibrous tissue that connect bones to other bones. The anterior cruciate ligament connects the femur (thigh bone, top) to the tibia (shin bone, bottom centre), and prevents them from moving too much in relation to one other. A tear in this ligament often results from a sporting injury. The tear causes pain and swelling, and can make the knee unstable. Treatment is with rest and painkillers. Surgery can be used to repair the ligament in severe cases. An arthroscope is an endoscope used to look at joints.
