The tunicwas visible below it, and on the neck and arms, sothat both garments are readily recognized inpictorial representations. The earliest monuments which picture the dal-matic as the dress of deacons are the mosaics of Supplementary Vestments 517 Ravenna in the middle of the sixth century, andtheir diaconal appropriation was indisputable be-fore that date. The Liber Pontificalis ascribes to Pope St. Syl-vester the regulation that deacons should wearthe dalmatic in the church. In the life of of Aries it is related that Pope Sym-machus (498-509) gave his deacons the privilegeof wearing the dalmatic, as was the custom in theRoman church.
