Castel del Monte in Apuglia, Southern Italy, was build by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick ll from 1240 to 1249. It is an octagonal castle with eight octagonal bastions or towers at each corner. Awarded world heritage status by UNESCO in 1996. Featured on the reverse side of the Italian one euro cent coin
