Light micrograph of a section of the endometrium, the mucosal lining of the uterus, taken at the late secretory stage (about 24th day of menstrual cycle). The endometrium consists of a ciliated epithelium supported by a highly cellular connective tissue stroma containing many tubular glands (saw-toothed in appearance, containing glycogen-rich secretions). Under hormonal influence the endometrium undergoes regular cyclical changes so as to offer a suitable environment for implantation of a fertilised ovum with an abundant supply of glycogen for nutrition until maternal vascular connection is made).
