William, Duke of Normandy (c1028-1087) William I, the Conqueror, king of England from 1066. William landed with his army near Hastings, Sussex on 13 October 1066. The following day at the Battle of Hastings the English were defeated and their king Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king, was killed. Wood engraving c1900.
