Algol, designated Beta Persei and known as the Demon Star, is a bright multiple star in Perseus constellation, located 93 light-years from Earth. It is one of the first variable stars to be discovered. Algol is a three-star system in which the hot luminous primary member and the larger, but cooler and fainter secondary member regularly pass in front of each-other causing eclipses. Thus Algol's luminosity regularly dips to about 1/3 its normal brightness. The period of variability is 2,86 days and the eclipse lasts about 10 hours. This image was created from photographic material taken with the Oschin Telescope at Mount Palomar Observatory, forming part of the Digitized Sky Survey 2.
