Green 1 Pengo Magyar Kiralyi Posta 'Holy Crown of Hungary' postage stamp, Liberation of Hungary Series, issued Budapest, 1945
A stamp in the Liberation of Hungary Series, issued Budapest, May 1945. The Holy Crown of Hungary was used in the coronation of Hungarian kings since the crowning of the first king, Stephen 1 (), who ruled Hungary 1000-1038 and offered the crown at his coronation to the Virgin Mary. The cross of the crown was knocked crooked in the 17th Century, possibly when an iron chest was closed before the crown had been put away properly. The cross was left slanted and the holy crown is always depicted as such. A stamp designed by Hungarian painter, Bela Kontuly (1904-1983).
