When Grant finallyobtained permission from General Halleckto advance the attack upon Fort Henryon the Tennessee River, near the border ofKentucky, Flag Officer Foote .started upthe river, February 2, 1862, convoying thetransports, loaded with the advance de-tachment of Grants seventeen thousandtroops. Arriving before Fort Henry on. FLAG-OFFICER FOOTE February 6th, the intrepid naval com-mander at once began the bombardmentwith a well-aimed shot from the eleven heavy guns of the fort respondedin chorus, and an iron rain began to fallwith telling effect upon the Cincinnati,the Essex, the Carondelet, and the , which were steaming forward half amile in advance of the rear division of thesquadron. At a range of 1,700 yards theCincinnati opened the engagement. Aftera little over an hour of heavy firing thecolors on Fort Henry were lowered andGeneral Tilghman surrendered it to Flag-Officer Foote. \\Tien General Grant ar-rived an hour later, Foote turned over thefort to him and returned to Cairo with hisdisabled gunboats.
