Saharan dust plume over the Caribbean, satellite image. Image 3 of 3. North is at top. Haiti and the Dominican Republic are at top left, and the South American mainland across bottom. The dust plume is the brown haze (a few thousand kilometres across) over the Caribbean Sea at centre right. The dust has been blown west across the Atlantic from Africa and the Sahara, the world's largest desert. Clouds (white) are also seen. Large dust plumes like this provide nutrients for soils in the Caribbean and South America. This image was obtained on 27 June 2007 by the MODIS instruments on NASA's Terra satellite.
