WE are all familiar with three classes of reli-gious men : first, the ecclesiastical place-hunter, who uses the Church for his own personalends ; second, the churchman who regards theChurch, and generally his particular branch ofthe Church, as essential to the cause of religion,and, therefore, adheres to it, however serious hemay regard its errors or its shortcomings ; third,the non - churchman, who may affiliate himselfwith some church as a convenient and advanta-geous method of cooperating with others in pro-moting the religious life, but who regards the(yhurch always with secondary interest as a meansto a higher end. To the first the Church is ameans to a selfish end ; to the third, a means toan unselfish end ; to the second it is practically,though not, perhaps, avowedly, an end in same classification is possible in politics.
