He served in the state legis-lature and convention for forming a new constitution forthe state. He was married twice, his first wife, CarolineCrane, a native of Vermont, died in Libertyville, leavingtwo daughters, Carrie Josephine and Annie Elizabeth, bothnow married; and his second wife, also a native of Ver-mont, has two children, one son, Josiah Walter, and adaughter, Sarah Hannah. Franklin Jenness Butler graduated at the CambridgeLaw School in 1847, and entered the practice of law inBoston, where he married Sarah Ann Davidson. Elizabeth H. Wentworth S. Butler graduated at Dartmouth College,and studied for the Episcopalian ministry, but in 1(S56 wasappointed librarian of the New-York Society library, wherehe has since remained. The home estate of Josiah Butler is now owned andoccupied by Horace B. Stearns. GATE FAMILY. Francis Cate was the brother of Mr. Jonathan Cate ofNorthwood, and came from Nottingham to Deerfield in 1824,and died March 2, 1865 ; his fii-st wife was Sally D
