The Beirut - A Brazilian Sandwich.

Beirut is a Brazilian sandwich probably influenced by Syrian-Lebanese cuisine made with pita bread, brought to Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century by immigrants from the Middle East. The name Beirut is a reference to the capital of Lebanon, but in the Lebanese capital this sandwich is not eaten since it is a Brazilian creation, more specifically from São Paulo, where the Lebanese migrated to. It is possible to notice influences from other sandwiches appreciated in Brazil: the combination of ham and cheese exists in Misto-quente, whereas ham or roast beef with cheese and tomato exists in Bauru. Also, the combination of lettuce and tomato (and sometimes egg) exists in some Burger recipes. It is currently possible to find this type of sandwich in several regions and cities in Brazil. Some snack bars are served with fries and soda as side dishes, as is usually done in networks that serve Hamburgers, notably influenced by American culture. Thus, beirut is food originated from the miscegenation and mixture of cultural influences seen in a cosmopolitan metropolis like São Paulo. The recipe for beirut can vary a lot, the most common ingredients are: flatbread, roast beef or sliced lizard (or even ham), cheese, lettuce, tomato slices and a fried egg.
