A diver illuminates the boilers of the block ship Tabarka in Burra Sound,Orkney, biggest loss of life came on 14 October 1939 when a German U Boat slipped into Scapa Flow and torpedoed HMS Royal Oak with the loss of 833 men. The incident shocked Britain and Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered barriers to be put up to protect the fleet from this happening again. Blockships old fishing boats tankers etc were sunk to stop German u boats entering the flow some of these make exceptionally good dives today like the Tabarka a steamer built in 1909 totally upside down with her boilers exposed diving inside her shafts of light penetrate the hull lighting her like a cathederal. This ship made my favourite underwater images from the trip i loved being inside this wreck its a work of art a pure thing of Orkney Islands North of Scotland was a major British Naval base during WWI and WWII. It was also the scene of the Grand Scuttle on June 21 1919 when the 74 interned German battleships were scuttled on the orders of Rear Admiral Ludwig Von Reuter. Photo by Nigel Roddis
