In addition, it is wellequipped with glass, porcelain, platinum and iron ware, and reagents for the usual chemical work. In this laboratory petroleum and petroleum products, tars and tar products, creosoting oils, asphalts, bituminousemulsions, bituminous aggregates and all other types ofchemical road and paving materials, roofing materials, rub-ber, etc., are examined and tested. Chemical examina-. ;d-: ......,^ Extraction Hood—Bitumen Laboratory tions of rocks, clays, cements, etc., are made here, andresearches conducted on improvements in industrial prod-ucts and processes and the utilization of waste products forroad purposes. The testing and analysis of coal and in-vestigations relating to all classes of fuels are also con-ducted in this laboratory. This Division of the Institute is under the supervisionof Mr. Prevost Hubbard, who was formerly Chief Chem-ist of the Office of Public Roads, United States Depart- 24 ment of Agriculture. Mr. Hubbard Is the author ofDust Preventives and Road Binders and of many otherpublications on similar subjects. He has had wide ex-perience in the examination and use of all types of roadand paving materials, and has been engaged as lecturer onengineering chemistry in the new post-graduate course inhighway engineering at Columbia University. For thepast two years he has served in
