NIJMEGEN, Netherlands (Sept. 20, 2018) Ambassador to the Netherlands, Peter Hoekstra and 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment Command Sergeant Major Joseph Hissong meet each other at the Waal River Memorial Bridge. The memorial recognizes the 48 Soldiers who died in the waters beneath the historic Waal River Bridge on September 20, 1944 while securing it from Nazi control during the Allied invasion of Europe and the subsequent liberation of the Netherlands.
