The stunning natural rock formation of basalt columns at Dverghamrar (the dwarf cliffs) with cliffs behind rising into the mist, Iceland

This extraordinary landscape is believed to have formed during the Ice Age. At the time, the sea level was much higher, and the sea-waves are believed to be the force behind the peculiar façade of the rocks. Columnar basalt forms through the cooling of lava and a build-up of contraction forces. Today Dverghamrar are a protected natural monument.
