This observatory was founded in 1839 by the German-Russian astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve. The observatory was rebuilt after being heavily damaged during World War II. The 30-inch refractor was constructed by Repsold and Sons of Hamburg, in 1884. This is plate I from 'A Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy' (1890, 4th edition, volume II) by British author George Frederick Chambers (1841 1915).
